Losing a job is both a public and a personal event. Every loss is as unique as the situation in which it occurs. Factors such as age, personality, gender, culture, faith, marital status, abilities, values, experience, and education all contribute to the uniqueness of a loss.
In the case of a job loss, as with any loss, you must undergo a period of grieving. This event triggers many thoughts and emotions. While there is no magic formula for handling job loss, this book offers guidelines in five stages to help you recover.
Stage l: Shock ("I've lost my job!")
Stage 2: Bargaining for answers ("Why me?")
Stage 3: Giving in to reality ("What now?")
Stage 4: Accepting your loss; preparing for the future ("What's next?")
Stage 5: Your new job ("I've moved on".)
In recovering from job loss, it is important to recognize and move through each of these stages. Expect to move in and out of the stages of job loss before reaching the last stage. Stage 5 will help you beyond your recovery. It is often overlooked, but can be crucial to your career in the long term.
